Things to do in Kassandra
Kassandra is the westernmost of the three "fingers" in Halkidiki. The peninsula has been separated for some time from the rest of Halkidiki through a channel at Nea Potidaia and is well known for the clear waters and the breathtaking landscapes.
The busiest beach is probably Xenia Beach; White sand, crystal clear sea and numerous beach bars. Of all the beaches in the area this has the least stones and is pleasant to walk on unlike others close by, such as the Golden Beach. The sea itself is beautiful and you can walk out in shallow waters for a while, while water sports are located nearby making this the ideal beach in the area. It offers lots of activities for the visitors. The parking is in the ruins of the old Xenia hotel. Definitely recommend for a nice relaxing day by the beach.
Golden Beach is only a few minutes’ drive from Pefkochori. Beautiful calm sea, but pebbly once in the water. A bit rocky, but that makes it ideal for snorkelling and diving since the area is rich of sea life. Less busy than Xenia Beach but definitely a must if you’re visiting Kassandra.
Many people think the area has been named after the nearby beach-bar but the truth is Glarokavos is the little harbour that also gave its name to the beautiful beach and beach-bar located next to it. The harbour is a good shelter for small boats, has a nice beach front and lots of pine trees around.
Siviri Beach is on the west coast of Kassandra and it’s perfect for kids and families. A bit narrow, but sandy and not extremely busy. There are quite a few beach bars with sunbeds and a nautical centre for those interested. Free parking nearby is available and there are showers and changing rooms to make your lives easier.
Not far away from Siviri, Posidi Beach offers a big variation; fine sand to pebbles or small to medium-sized cobbles, relatively deserted areas depending on the day, to popular heavy crowded beach bars near the Camping. In general, very clear waters with incredible colours in all the shades of blue! Undoubtedly, Posidi ranks among the Top 10 beaches in Halkidiki and one of the best beaches in Greece.
Afitos or Athitos is a traditional village in Kassandra Halkidiki which is located 83 km away from Thessaloniki. It has an amazing view of Toroneos gulf as the village is built on a hill overlooking the coast. Most houses are built of stone with an excellent architecture. Small squares, cobbled streets and traditional taverns create a beautiful scenery totally harmonized with the natural landscape. Visitors also have the opportunity to admire the unique architecture of the church of St. Demetrius which was built in 1859 and is located in the central square and also mansions and famous sculptures of Vassilis Pavlis. In the village center you will find the folklore museum which houses various art exhibitions and you can see tools and utensils used in the past by local residents. A very good option for a night out.
